Made it through the past week without major events!
The next two weeks will mark the end of the major planting part of the season.
This will free up more time for enhancements to the farm, like a real compost bin, some personal gardening space and general clean up and enhancements of the exterior.
In the market garden, we now have a vegetable garden, a semi permanent flower garden and an herb garden.
We hope eventually to have a small orchard and bees.
The pinnacle would be a greenhouse!
The market garden is growing great!
Rich went to the Fitchburg Market this week with exponentially better results.
This week Grass Is Greener Gardens offered Tomato Plants, Mixed Baby Salad, Radishes, Fancy Coleus and Cat grass plants.
It took a lot of analysis and post event evaluations to determine that low sales at the first market resulted from a lack of inventory and a poor consumer facing marketing strategy.
Now Grass Is Greener Gardens is developing a brand and image of its own!
(clean smiley farmer, nifty vintage tablecloths on the table and baskets brimming with fresh veggies and plants.)
The basics of ho-hum business-guy stuff really do seem to apply here as well.
Field In Grass:
The field that wanted to stay 'in grass' (as reported in week one) was tilled again by a local farmer.
It is generally free of grass and we have planted much of it.
We are planting gourds, pumpkins and squash which will likely cover the balance of the fields.
Watch for pumpkin fest in the fall.
We may also have tomato fest in late August.
Stay tuned on those two items.
More on Mulch:
The highlight of my weekend was the repair of the mulch machine.
Ok - it is really a riding lawnmower with a blower attachment and a tiny trailer, but now that it works right - it is a mulch making machine.
Rich fixed the old thing up and it is a mulch factory on wheels.
Grass clippings make the best free mulch.
Life is good.
The House:
Little change on the interior, with the exception of a good cleaning and a few leftover moving boxes shifted from here to there.
House still in a state of construction.
Happy Gardening!
